Pencil pines (Athrotaxis cupressoides) are endemic to Tasmania. Individual trees are known to live to 1200 years of age, but many stands like this can also be genetically identical, meaning it could be considered as just one tree, lasting over thousands of years!

Quite a refreshing change of conditions up Trullenuer/Frenchmans Cap, Lutruwita/Tasmania. Accompanied by the blasting snow, crackle of ice and white silence.

Scorched leaves on charred, blackened earth of Takayna, where over 80,000 hectares has burnt in recent months.

Fire has shaped Takayna over millennia, through cultural practices and natural burns, but with changes in climate and the rapid increase of dry lighting, fires are igniting more regularly and burning deeper into landscapes previously unbeknown to the growing inferno. This increase in intensity will certainly lead to ecological devastation as we continue deeper through the anthropocene.

Last week we joined the Bob Brown Foundation once again for their annual Art for Takayna fieldtrip. This year we ventured to the coast with a small group of artists of various disciplines, but with the rivers run dry, we relocated to the forests, revisiting old friends of the still standing Sumac SU055C foresty coupe, Takayna, Lutruwita/Tasmania ๐Ÿƒ#tarkine #tasmania #forest #landscape #forest
