On Dec 16, Twitter suspended our @joinmastodon account after we shared a link to the newly registered Mastodon account of @ElonJet, an account that broadcasts public flight path data of Elon Musk’s private jet, which was previously suspended from Twitter itself. At the same time, accounts of multiple journalists from major publications such as CNN, The New York Times, The Washington Post, as well as various independent journalists, were likewise suspended for either linking to the account itself or talking about the event.

I guess I'm back here because *gestures vaguely at bird app*. Hive was nice for a time but it is still too buggy (lol). Cohost is hard to look at for too long.

I feel like the community I came to appreciate from the hell site has dispersed across too many socials for me to keep up with. It was a terrible place but we had carved out some pockets of good in there. Now they're either gone or soon will be.

My anxiety doesn't work well with doomscrolling on one or two feeds. Five feeds is too many.

Yes, you can go to another instance that doesn't ban discussion of racism at the drop of the hat, but it does not change that you lose everything you built in the previous one and there is no greater oversight on instances to protect marginalized people other than the honor system. And we all know how well that works.

So, unfortunately, mastodon is a pass for me. I don't want to use yet another service that claims inclusivity while oppressing people with harsh truth to tell.

It is worth noting to my friends trying to find a new post-Twitter home: mastodon has had a recent purge of POC activists, for unknown reasons ATM but the common thread seems to be discussing racism--in any context. A lot of bipoc creators that I follow are swearing off the service entirely.
