@datum To be clear, I really like the use of outdoor spaces to lower risks, and I encourage that whenever possible. I just see too many people thinking that being outdoors is a perfect solution which completely prevents transmission.

I always want people to be thinking about the realities of their own specific situations, but I also want to give reasonably cautious, broadly applicable guidance.

@datum As for the 15 minutes to clear air outdoors, that should be edited to say "up to." Depending on humidity, barometric pressure, wind, sun exposure, time of day, and countless other factors - it can be anywhere from near instantly in very windy conditions to 15+ minutes in stagnant air with pressure and humidity which make things linger low to the ground rather then rising.

Realistically, 15 minutes is a cautious and easy to remember number more than a critical threshold.

@datum Yes, strategies for mitigating harassment aren't discussed enough. For instance, the respirators pictured below are more likely to get attention for their decorations than for being N95s.

It's been a while since I read up on zinc, so I'll look into it again. I seem to recall it needing really frequent/substantial dosing - not risky, just maybe annoying to do. I'll check.

Metformin has shown promise, but requiring a prescription removed it from contention for this document.

@thatkatharine Happy to see it being useful.
So much of the info is just scattered across a bunch of different platforms and sources, and I wanted an easier thing to point at when people asked me questions.

I put together a reference document to compile lots of disparate info regarding respirators/masks. The PDF is available to view or to download on my website:
https://texanalysis.com

There's info about mods like drinking valves, chin pleats to fit smaller faces, and beard bands to help those with facial hair get better protection.

There's also info about various decoration options to infuse more fun and style into your respirator.

And of course, there's respirator sizing and sourcing guidance.

@PostcardsFromParadise
Yep, a bunch of people still vouch for double masking since it was popularized by the CDC. However, its results are highly inconsistent, averaging out to a wash much of the time, because it's very difficult to get both in the same position every time without shifting/crushing the mask underneath.

That said, that's just what my reading and research has found for me, so I choose a single high-quality N95 rather than any mix of double masking.

You may have found different.

@PostcardsFromParadise I understand you've got the Powecoms now, so maybe these options will wait til the next time you need to order.

I would still recommend that you avoid double masking, though. Better to do what you can to make the seal of the one mask as solid as possible.
