* you only need a handful tools and a few languages to build practically everything you want
* good documentation is worth it - reading it and writing it
* testing, validating, measuring - whatever you want to call it is worth knowing really well

Wann versteht die Regierung, dass Verbrenner und Öl-Heizungen nicht Freiheit, sondern Abhängigkeit bedeuten?

Last night I went to a 70th birthday party and ended up sitting next to Frank.

Frank used to work as a computer programmer, because this was the 1970s to 90s and people had normal job titles that described real things, instead of "full stack orchestration engineer" or "solutions architect".

Anyway Frank's employer was the Victorian Attorney General's department. He wrote, updated and maintained in-house software for managing the court system, trial documentation managements and so on using low level languages.

The point of this post is that there was nothing special about this period of history that made it possible for government departments to write and maintain their own software to solve their own problems then but not now.

The complete lack of any in-house capacity to do this kind of thing is a political choice. Frank is a reminder of that.

To exist online in 10 years, you're going to have to give a random company a face scan and photo ID and they're going to give that and everything you post to the government to spy on you for being queer, left-wing, "a criminal," or whatever. None of your data or communications will be private. The government and corporations will go through all of it.

If you don't want that to happen, you should raise a stink about "age verification" right now because that's what they're actually building.

*For what it is, it's pretty good. It probably needs a sequel that goes a thousand years into the future.

Ich bin Bücher, Comcs, Serien und Filme leid, bei denen sich "die Guten" dadurch auszeichnen, dass sie wie in einem Videospiel am Ende "die Bösen" im Kampf besiegen. Überhaupt dieses Konzept "des Bösen" als Endgegner ...
Das ist als gelegentlicher Eskapismus nett, aber in der Breite einfach nur flach, unterkomplex und fern jeder Realität. Aber leider ist es inzwischen Mainstream und das ödet mich an.
