Someone told me that they would never join Mastodon because they can’t buy followers for it.

And they just said it like so nonchalantly. As if everybody bought followers, so they weren’t doing anything wrong.

I told them that it was probably a good idea that they weren’t on Mastodon anyway.

You owe me one Mastodon.

I've now been here in the Fediverse regularly for well over a month and a half. I have thousands of followers, and I follow thousands. I have not yet seen a single troll, nor even a belligerent person or post. Not a single one. The most offensive thing I've experienced is a point of view I disliked seeing boosted too often. If we've all learned the price of incivility, maybe we really can make this Fedi thing work. It can't hurt to try, right?

People need to know that the Fediverse's engagement is like 100x more impactful than Twitter's engagement.

But instead, there's this weird perception that there's no reach here.

Ha!

Don't be fooled by Fediverse follower counts. Just don't.
