People need to know that the Fediverse's engagement is like 100x more impactful than Twitter's engagement.

But instead, there's this weird perception that there's no reach here.

Ha!

Don't be fooled by Fediverse follower counts. Just don't.

@atomicpoet That's right! We don't follow Chris for the posts, we follow him to figure out to make our Trotting more Trottier!
@atomicpoet the fact that link traffic doesn’t reveal the source may contribute to the “black hole” nature of the #fediverse?
@atomicpoet communication is always much better than numbers
@atomicpoet muting is huge at the other place… blocking, not so much… but I believe people who think they’re shadow banned are mostly going to be subjected to being muted anyway as well… it’s just really tense over there.
@atomicpoet I just remembered how fed up I was leading up to all this over there, I was literally blocking like crazy, even friends 🤣 the algorithm was traumatic & I just wanted anything factual about Ukraine only… I blocked a lot more over there than the other people over there usually do… I didn’t consider mute toward the end at all… just block & more block… lot of misinformation even before musk got to play the twitter superior of all keyboard warriors lmao !!
@atomicpoet This is SUCH a true statement! I had ~120 followers & in a 72 hour period got over 1K favorites on a toot of mine. Fedi works in mysterious ways.😅 Follower count doesn't mean the same thing here as other places. If people resonate with you, they may boost or reach out. Not all of those connections end up in follows, and not all are meant to. For me, it's the connection/conversation in the moment, not the collection of people. But yeah, lack of followers doesn't inhibit reach imo.
@atomicpoet I’ve been saying for weeks that it’s completely different from the microscopic fish/huge ocean feeling of being an unimportant Tweep. There I rarely received any acknowledgment. I had gotten to where I just read it for the news, not expecting any interaction. Here I have a dozen or more every day.

@atomicpoet I've been seriously considering compiling some data on this, considering I've basically been crossposting between Twitter and Mastodon for five something years.

like... without doing so, I'm positive it would make for a very powerful visual.

@atomicpoet Got to keep in mind that there aren't many follow-bots on the Fediverse.
@atomicpoet massively depends on your definition of "engagement". If you you mean eyeballs to sell to and ad revenue, then yes, the engagement here is poor and lacks impact. If you mean honest human connection with interests and expansion of relationships, and exploration of shared interests, then the engagement in the #fediverse is several orders of magnitude more.
@atomicpoet the disappointment is mainly from the “influencers” community not able to sell their stuff.
@jjude @atomicpoet while true, a lot of artists, academics, journalists, writers, sex workers, and probably dozens of other non "influencer" professions are having their livelihood snatched away as the platform they relied on for reach is colonized by nazis. I do have some sympathy for people just trying to make ends meet, and they have to abruptly try to learn a new model.
@atomicpoet
1. People that follow you are more likely to actually see what you post.
2. There is a much higher percentage of human-run accounts.
3. Because people are building up their social graph, they’re more likely to interact with new people that they would have ignored on legacy services.
@atomicpoet but but the metrics!!!
👆 this is especially interesting coming from some who I recall chiding businesses for focusing too much on the wrong metrics 😂
