I've now been here in the Fediverse regularly for well over a month and a half. I have thousands of followers, and I follow thousands. I have not yet seen a single troll, nor even a belligerent person or post. Not a single one. The most offensive thing I've experienced is a point of view I disliked seeing boosted too often. If we've all learned the price of incivility, maybe we really can make this Fedi thing work. It can't hurt to try, right?
@shoq I've seen relatively few, and from many years on the bird app I've learned to block early 🥴
@shoq I'm really enjoying it here.
@shoq I have had to block one person for being a petulant man baby.
@Oozenet No one would fault you :)
@shoq I dunno. I saw someone talking about chocolate chip cookies being inappropriate at Xmas and that's pretty offensive. Like, when are chocolate chip cookies ever inappropriate? The nerve! 😉😂

@shoq This perspective seems off, based on the experience that I've seen black folks on the fedi talking about - entire instances have been trolled off the fedi, many black users get nothing but racism in their comments.

its worth seeking out some other views here, not everything is roses.

@shoq they're out there, but the federated structure and lack of text search seems to limit their effective reach. They're largely confined to renegade instances that are easy to block, and often banned by more civilized instances.

@emc2 Yea, but that's not sustainable either. I don't see this ever replacing centralization without search. I understand the problems with it. I think I have a way to mitigate some abuse, but I think the rest just has to be accepted.

In the opinion of most, what led to the explosive growth of the Internet was the class of 94-95 (Yahoo, Lycos, Altavista, Excite). In other words, search. :)

@shoq I agree, and I think you'll eventually get Usenet levels of trolling. There will have to be active mitigations.

The question that remains in my mind is how much on Twitter was algorithm driven, and whether that will reconstitute itself fully.

@shoq Glad your experience so far has been so nice I do run into unpleasant things from time to the me here, but they are rare. I had to block one person a couple of weeks ago who was using very offensive language.
