Yep, because e-mail already had momentum that it got 20 years before Google even existed, and everyone already was using it. Google first tried to replace e-mail with Google Wave and it was a complete fiasco.

They still haven't given up on e-mail yet though. And I'm guessing you don't run your own e-mail server, because you wouldn't use that argument.

As more and more people started using gmail it gave them control. They are now telling you what e-mail needs to contain to be able to be delivered.

The most frustrating thing is that I for example have SPF, DKIM, DMARC set up. My IP address was used dor 2 decades, same with the domain. I never sent spam, or end up on any black list, but gmail started labeling my e-mails as spam (even though for many years they didn't have problem with it) stuff like this. It is discouraging any small e-mail service by purposefully breaking SMTP.

There was traction, there were tons of different clients available: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Free_XMPP_clients

There were transports (server side gateways) to other instant messaging networks (I think that had large impact toward adaptation).

Community was kind of niche like on Mastodon. There were features that GTalk didn't support like a group chat for example.

This is more detailed summary of what happened: https://ploum.net/2023-06-23-how-to-kill-decentralised-networks.html

@louisvgn provided the link https://ploum.net/2023-06-23-how-to-kill-decentralised-networks.html

It summarizes it much better. I was just regular user and some details mentioned (which made it even worse) I did not know and some I forgot.

It is also right, I was running a private ejabberd server before GTalk even existed, and had friend on it, but once Google pulled the plug I realized that even old XMPP users weren't there anymore as they switched to GMail because it was more convenient. Google essentially destroyed the network.

@oblomov @tommertron exactly, we gave benefit of the doubt to Google two decades ago when they looked like a different, user friendly company. It didn't turn out well. Facebook pretty much was always predatory, and they deserve benefit of the doubt?

@ocdtrekkie @tommertron proportionally it was similar to lemmy vs reddit or mastadon vs twitter.

Also what makes you think people got smarter out of sudden?

If anything, I see the opposite, Musk's twitter, with Spez reddit, people seem to not mind those things anymore.

Now with #threads where you have access to only people from Fediverse and threads where you have access to people from fediverse and people from Instagram the threads will seem more attractive. And when #threads becomes more popular, upon defederation people will just stay with it.

@ocdtrekkie @tommertron

Many people who were previously on Jabber, switched because it was more convenient (i.e. they later added it to gmail). When they defederated those people didn't come back.

@tommertron harm is that they practically destroyed XMPP when it was rapidly growing. It never benefits a company to be just a single server in a federated network and not having control over it. Imagine, how can they make money by displaying ads and spying on users, when users can just jump to another server and avoid all of that?

It's guaranteed it will end up exact same way.

@ProjectFearlessness it's definitively the last one. If they were observing GDPR standards for the whole world it would be much easier to keep them in mind while designing the service.

This looks more like: "OK, now we are in US and UK, what things will we need to disable to be GDPR complaint?" they obviously won't disable anything that makes them money and is allowed.

@tommertron Google did this to Jabber/XMPP with GTalk. First they joined the network. Existing XMPP users convinced their friends to join GTalk (because it was easier for non tech people) once their network picked up, they defederated. I don't expect anything less from #meta and their #threads

@LGUG2Z No, but there's this: https://nixos.wiki/wiki/Lemmy

BTW: lemmy.world is currently the most populated lemmy server and after they upgraded it to 0.18 it is struggling. Any other server has better experience. I actually tried kbin.social (it's federated with lemmy so you can see the same communities/magazines) and frankly I like experience on it over what I had with lemmy. Their PWA is better than the native lemmy mobile applications.
