Rumour: Google intends to discontinue the Android Open Source Project

With the release of Android 16, Google changed how it developed Android. Development is now taking place behind closed doors, with the code dropped after the corresponding version has been released to Pixel devices. Well, it turns out this wasn’t the only thing Google has changed about Android development.

That fancy new #glass style of #macOS #Tahoe 26 or the improvements to #Apple apps don't get me hyped, but the native #Linux #containerization surely does!

At the moment it's unclear if this was intentional or there's just a delay in releasing the Pixel source code. There are also rumors that this might have something to do with current antitrust investigations and the demand to break up Google to separate products like Chrome and Android.

There has been some unsettling change in the recent release of #Android16 to #AOSP.

As custom ROM makers found out by surprise, #Pixel device-specific source code is missing this time. The code was usually released together with AOSP. Without this device-specific code it's not possible to build or run AOSP 16 on any recent Pixel device. Therefor custom ROMs for Pixel devices based on AOSP 16 cannot be built.
