Hey folks, now that I understand the #fediverse a bit better, I’ve made the decision to move to a smaller server. Trying to help spread out the load of new users, as well as improve performance on my end. :)

I’ll do the migration when the server load seems lower, and this account will forward over to the new one if all goes well. I’ll put the new acct in my profile here, too!

Good morning!
No more mean, angry people…

All hands report to this side of the Overton Window and push as hard as you can

It's not gonna shift itself

This one is for all the new people on #Mastodon: did you know that the #fediverse has more than just a microblogging replacement? And that they can all interoperate with your Mastodon account?

Check them out!

Does anybody want to build a little fediverse app idea I had? I don’t have the bandwidth to build a side project right now but I’d gladly sponsor somebody to do so.

Just a thought, directed to the wrong people, but anyone who professes to want to be supportive and better understand the experience of marginalized folks and make things easier for them would be really well-served and probably learn a lot by listening and incorporating the local culture/etiquette tips being flung around, which are literally telling you what works.

If you want the fun culture tips as well, we will teach you, and create new with you. But the CW and checking profiles for preferences about contact and stuff IS supporting marginalized folks, that's where those customs came from and we finesse the heck out of them regularly.

If any new/growing masto instances need help figuring out #governance, I just finished a PhD on large-scale online governance and I have room for some pro-bono consultations
So here's what I've learned.
Mastodon isn't Twitter.
And that's by design.
You've grown used to things designed to give you that anger rush.
Mastodon is very deliberately built to avoid that.
The temptation is to replicate your Twitter experience.
Picking arguments, amplifying trolls.
Please don't.
This isn't your house, people here put time into building it.
Content warnings, ALT tags.
Don't turn it into a replica of the mess you just left.
If you miss the fights, the birdsite is still there.
I have encountered more image descriptions on Mastodon in 24 hours than I have in Twitter in a couple of years. Seriously. I'm not exaggerating.
As a blind person, this means a lot to me. If you read this and you describe your images, thank you so, so, so much on behalf of all of us. If you don't, now you know you'll be helping random Internet strangers make sense of your posts by typing in a few more words than usual.
