Hi! I'm B and I like silent films and writing fiction and I'm learning how to draw. Maybe I'll share things here! Pronouns: They/Them

The SFSFF restoration of Below the Surface is being released by Flicker Alley in March! I fell in love with this film from the copy uploaded to YouTube by the Eye Filmmuseum and I can't wait to see a restored version!

I dont ask for much, just a collection of all extant films by Germaine Dulac. Is that so much? #SilentFilm #GermaineDulac

My brother told me once that if you're capable of creating new things, you have a moral obligation to do so. That not everyone had the time/skills/resources to create, and the world needed your creations. It needed *you* to create them.

The context was writing stories, but it was the first time I'd ever heard a moral defense of art.

I think about that moment a lot. It happened 14 years ago, it set me on the path I'm still on today, and it only gets more true.

RIVALS (1923): Wacky adventure #silentfilm from Harry Piel and Weimar cinema, budget be damned it seemed, as this thing spared no expense to generate twists and turns. The world’s most ostentatious costume ball, invaded by an electrified robot! A submarine! A bizarre Phantom Zone-style glass pyramid underwater death trap! Will never be accused of being boring, that’s for sure. Kudos for the production values and the creativity. I was thoroughly entertained. #PordenoneSilent

Have you tried turning yourself off and turning yourself back on again?
Slightly obsessed with this 70s wallpaper mural reflecting in the mirror of my hotel room in Edinburgh.
For being a Soviet era Russia constructivist film “Aelita, Queen of Mars” also has a good deal of German Expressionism in it. Like take these costume sketches for the film by Aleksandra Ekster for example.

THE TENTH SYMPHONY (1918): What a terrific experience to catch this Abel Gance #silentfilm in front of a packed house at MoMA with the legendary Donald Sosin accompanying. Great high melodrama. Composer believes himself wronged by his (faithful) wife, who actually is trying to save composer’s daughter from a man who had blackmailed her (got that?). Emmy Lynn does great job as the wife in selling all this. Great little flashes of style throughout. Symphony, final confrontation true highlights.
