I love how Lee handles family balance. Like, Kaul Shae denouncing the family initially left them imbalanced and now nobody holds the position they were supposed to and they are all stuck with roles they don't really fit into. It's tragic and relatable because that's actually how familys often work, you just get designated a role and fulfill it, no matter the cost. That's also something GoT did right.
The death of protagonist Kaul Lan right in the middle of book one was gutsy and unexpected and felt a lot like what made Game of Thrones so popular: That haunting feeling of contingency, like everyone could pass at any moment just by bad luck. It sparked my first interest in the future of the Kaul family and by now I am kinda hooked.
Getting into Fonda Lee's Green Bone Trilogy was more difficult than expected. For my personal taste there was a little too much action and the characters weren't all that developed. However, after the first half of book one I started reading it primarily as a family saga and that worked out well, as most characters are defined primarily through their relationships with family members. So I am givin book two a chance right now.
Today I wanna recommend Jo Walton's novel Among Others. It explores how engaging with science-fiction and fantasy literature and its community can help you move foreward after a loss, all while providing you with an amazing list of classical science-fiction and fantasy for further reading. It's narrated by a traumatized teenage girl and the diary style can feel a little YA, but I found it extremely relatable, so please check it out. #bookrecommendation #scifibooks #sciencefiction #fantasy
Given that this is a space for geeky tech people, I am surprised that there isn't all that much science-fiction related stuff happening here. I've been browsing hashtags like #scifibooks and #sciencefiction but if there's an actual sf or sff community here I haven't found it yet.

Us invading this platform every other year and returning to  as soon as we get bored must be oh so irritating for actual mastodon users. This time I hope I'll stay.
@stjaerna Super late to the party for this one... It's a blast!
