@Stoori That is great advice! I made this account a while back when migrating was kinda complicated, but apparently it's a lot easier now. Wandering.shop looks good, I'll check them out. Thank you so much for your help!

@schokopflaster @Stoori Oooh, thank you! I've been looking for an alternative to goodreads because I love to keep track of my own reading, but couldn't get into goodreads at all. It felt competitive and shallow.

I also returned to science-fiction and even fantasy after a long break, due to the new wave of ambitious feminist and queer fiction. There is so much good stuff being written right now.

I love how Lee handles family balance. Like, Kaul Shae denouncing the family initially left them imbalanced and now nobody holds the position they were supposed to and they are all stuck with roles they don't really fit into. It's tragic and relatable because that's actually how familys often work, you just get designated a role and fulfill it, no matter the cost. That's also something GoT did right.
The death of protagonist Kaul Lan right in the middle of book one was gutsy and unexpected and felt a lot like what made Game of Thrones so popular: That haunting feeling of contingency, like everyone could pass at any moment just by bad luck. It sparked my first interest in the future of the Kaul family and by now I am kinda hooked.
Getting into Fonda Lee's Green Bone Trilogy was more difficult than expected. For my personal taste there was a little too much action and the characters weren't all that developed. However, after the first half of book one I started reading it primarily as a family saga and that worked out well, as most characters are defined primarily through their relationships with family members. So I am givin book two a chance right now.
@Stoori Yeah that seems accurate. It's a shame though. Most tech people I've met are really into sf and eager to discuss it. And many folks in the sff community would really benefit from rethinking social media.
@[email protected] I'm aware, we are acquainted on  . :) I'm (re-)following all chill sff people who migrate, hoping this may finally be the place where we discuss books and dial down on the drama, given that this platform is not built for activism and outrage.
@[email protected] I stumbled upon it but didn't know if it was still active. I would absolutely love to join it in May. It is exactly the kind of thing I am looking for.
Today I wanna recommend Jo Walton's novel Among Others. It explores how engaging with science-fiction and fantasy literature and its community can help you move foreward after a loss, all while providing you with an amazing list of classical science-fiction and fantasy for further reading. It's narrated by a traumatized teenage girl and the diary style can feel a little YA, but I found it extremely relatable, so please check it out. #bookrecommendation #scifibooks #sciencefiction #fantasy
Given that this is a space for geeky tech people, I am surprised that there isn't all that much science-fiction related stuff happening here. I've been browsing hashtags like #scifibooks and #sciencefiction but if there's an actual sf or sff community here I haven't found it yet.
