Assistant Professor at University of Nebraska Lincoln. Interests include #rstats and #python (to a lesser extent), #reproducibility, #forensics, #statistics, #datavis. I work with #tidyverse, #quartopub, #rstudio/#posit, and more.

All views are my own - I certainly don't speak for my employer. (To prove it, football sucks).

Language models deteriorating because they're training on an internet that's increasingly full of language model nonsense is incredible, we've invented mad computer disease
@ataustin @joranelias yeah, every time posit takes a step to accommodate python, all I hear is python bros I worked with saying "see, even rstudio doesn't like R." I'm still skeptical that this shift is a winning strategy long-term (losing focus from people who love you to accommodate people who hate you, in hopes that being 4th-or-5th-place python IDE will be enough to create a viable customer base), but I hope to be proven wrong!

🤩 We are thrilled to announce that Professor Catherine D'Ignazio, author of Data Feminism and Counting Feminicide: Data Feminism in Action, will be the Capstone Speaker at IEEE VIS '24! Don’t miss her talk on visualizing inequality. https://dusp.mit.edu/people/catherine-dignazio

@mhaklay @academicchatter @hci Beyond the lack of consent, the anonymity also really bothers me I have to say. I think I would mind a lot less if there were some names of researchers attached to it, instead of hiding behind a generic email and throwing around the names of institutions.

Otherwise fully agree, touching computers is becoming more and more problematic and has been for years now.

@gedankenstuecke @academicchatter @hci agree on the shitiness of the lack of consent. I would also associate that with the ongoing decline of ethics in computer science as a discipline - the big tech culture is flowing into the discipline and the sense of break things is very noticeable...

Speaking of accessibility, we are big fans of the film Crip Camp about a camp for teens with disabilities in the 1960s whose alumni sparked a landmark disability rights movement.

In addition to being an amazing documentary in its own right, Crip Camp puts its money where its mouth is with great accessibility options:

- Trailer with Audio Description;
- Full Film with Audio Description, Open Captions, Closed Captions and subtitles, in multiple languages.

We had the privilege of creating the official Crip Camp curriculum guide and discussion guide. They are free for everyone from our library, if you'd like to share this film with your students, community group, film club, etc.

@kjhealy New version of chatbot never gets around to responding to e-mail. This is definitely an improvement.
