Not everyone has the motivation of being directly targeted by GOP bigotry, to push them to vote regardless. If the alternative you're expected to vote for makes you sick to your stomach...it's all too easy to stay home and rationalize that they'll win anyway.
And, well, if the Dems are throwing you under the bus anyway, focusing on electoral politics doesn't make a lot of sense.

Yeah early evolutionary theory was used to justify all sorts of the worst kinds of Victorian racism and imperialism. Also, eugenics, which really only fell out of favor after WWII.
Even without Darwin, other naturalists at the time would have come to similar conclusions (see Alfred Russell Wallace et al) given the cultural background.
