Been thinking about the U.S. #government and the #fediverse lately, and wondering if 18F has any plans in the works to create a managed Mastodon instance for gov’t folks (House/Senate, Cabinet officials, etc.)

The future is federated, but that’s one world where you want an “official” home instance for official accounts. And would make it easier for instance operators to choose to drop the fed-fediverse if it doesn’t align with their instance’s established rules, values, and culture.

Just a reminder, I wrote a bot that’s posting results from US House and Senate elections as they’re called. It’s been pretty stable for a couple days how, and there are still a few uncalled races. I’ll keep it running until the last race is called.

I’ll bring it back up for the Georgia runoffs next month, only then it’ll post precinct-level results as they’re posted to the Georgia SoS

Another tip, for #accessibility: use real words (or MixedCaseLikeThis) so screen readers and other assistive tech/affordances have an easier time understanding them.
My fellow #Twitter escapees, here’s a #MastodonTip: please consider not being “clever” with #hashtags here. When you don’t have an algorithm spreading your content to non-followers, it’s hashtags that help those strangers discover how awesome you are. Also, try using that search box to search for hashtags. Ask yourself, “Would someone type this made-up word to find my post?” #Taxonomy matters!

Forgot hashtags to let folks know about my first Mastodon bot, tracking US Senate and House #Election calls

I threw together a quick Mastodon bot that's posting US House/Senate election results as they are called. I'll monitor it for a while to make sure it keeps working.

You can follow it by searching for

in Mastodon search, or remote-follow on its profile

I’ll date myself a bit with this one, but it reminds me of local BBSs with FidoNet boards to “federate” posts to other local BBSs.

Yes, #TwitterMigrants, your Mastodon server of choice is probably slow. But you left #Twitter to get away from the hyperspeed doom-scrolling, right? 🏃

It’s definitely a different vibe here. Less shitposting. More authenticity. It’s like I’ve been at a loud party with a bunch of overserved screamers, and went straight to a neighborhood coffee shop where a bunch of my favorite people hang out. I’ll hang on Twitter for a while still because I’m a masochist, but really…this is SUCH a nice place.

I’m really happy to see so many of my favorite #TwitterMigrants from the birdsite here. The #TwitterMigration is going well so far!

Are you wondering which of your #Twitter favorites are here? You can use Debirdify to get a list of all your Twitter follows/followers that have linked to their Mastodon profile from Twitter. This is a web app that helps you find out which of the people you follow on Twitter are on Mastodon/in the Fediverse already and follow all of them easily.

@Gargron Would a PR be welcome for link verification using a Mastodon user’s Twitter profile? Or is that already in the works, given The Great Exodus?
