I'm getting a lot of great followers lately, for whom I am very grateful. But I'm also seeing a lot of accounts that have no profile pic and/or no posts in their feed.

Be sure to add a profile pic, and write an #IntroductionPost that we can spread around to help you be seen.

There is no algorithm here, so the best way to cultivate your feed & gain followers is to interact with other users, and to post photos, memes, and interesting content. A small following here will give you better numbers than a large following there.

You can follow #hashtags here!🎉 Be sure to use them to help your posts get noticed-- but only use relevant ones, don't throw trending hashtags in just to get views. It's rude.

You can edit your posts! 🥳

Remember to add #AltText to your images. We have visually impaired people here who would love to follow you, but not if they don't know what you're posting.

Regardless of your interests, be sure to follow @feditips and @mastodonmigration. They have some great information about the #Fediverse and easy-to-understand advice on how to be a power user on #Mastodon.

You can edit your posts (YAY!😀) and follow hashtags here. A few good hashtags to follow include #HashtagGames, #ThreeGoodThings, #Dogstodon, #Catstodon, and #HootinTootinTuesday.

Try to include #AltText for images, whenever you can. There are many visually impaired people here, and the Fediverse prides itself on being inclusive. (Be sure to check the AltText yourself, sometimes, as it can sometimes have info not in the toot itself, or simply be hilariously funny.)

DEFINITELY find out who your instance admin is, and follow them. That way, you'll be sure to hear about issues with your server or other important news in your community.

So let me get this straight… #Threads collects massive amounts of data, the platform is full of brands and celebrities, AND it uses an algorithm-driven feed. It tracks users, serves ads, and has quickly filled up, according to reports, with trolls, Nazis and the far right. Oh, and the site makes a shadow account for everyone with an Instagram profile, whether they want to participate or not. But still new users are flocking to the platform?? It’s a case of FOMO, and I don’t think it will last. F*ck Zuck and the corporate trojan horse he rode in on. Very disappointed in those I know who have bought the BS. My two cents on the #Meta #ThreadsApp discussion. I think my past experience in the publishing industry has given me a unique perspective on the #Fediverse.

The evolution I've witnessed in that industry over the years has helped me to recognize a similar evolution in social media now. My experiences there have shown me how the Ordinary Person has eventually become empowered by new technology-- in this case, ActivityPub and the Fediverse. I don't foresee a reversal in that evolution.

Regardless of what Meta does or does not do with their Threads app, I'm sure of one thing:

* Being chewed out for referring to a Toot as a Tweet

* Being politely corrected for not using #AltText

* Starting a flame war by mentioning that you occasionally still go back and check your old #BirdSite account

* Unintentionally starting a debate about how to properly use (and not use) the "Favortite" Star, just because you have been "liking" toots here.
