Some conclusions from the ongoing #ruby #rubygems debacle:
1. Politics is about what needs to get done, who does it, and how it's done. Everything is political.
2. Power differentials structure politics.
3. Open source is a site of political struggle.
4. Ideologies guide political struggle.
5. Between equal rights force decides.
@armahillo Right. RC has created an unstable situation. Without transparent and independent governance, this basically privatizes a critical component of Ruby infrastructure. It's now easier to hide wrongdoing.
@armahillo It's also very obvious that DHH is strawmanning critiques as 'woke' to distract from the allegations.
@armahillo I'm seeing a lot of "stop with the drama - just build stuff" then explicitly siding with Ruby Central. The duplicity among a very comfortable and libertarian elite is obvious.
shanecavThe hostile takeover of the RubyGems and Bundler code has been a long time coming. Corporate influence of major open-source Ruby projects has been growing for a while. This fiasco now makes the corporate control obvious. If you maintain a popular Ruby project and want to keep the F in FOSS, you should have had a democratic governance structure *yesterday*, one that is *explicitly* against corporate control of the project. You have to organize and fight to maintain independence. #ruby #rubygems
