Some conclusions from the ongoing #ruby #rubygems debacle:

1. Politics is about what needs to get done, who does it, and how it's done. Everything is political.
2. Power differentials structure politics.
3. Open source is a site of political struggle.
4. Ideologies guide political struggle.
5. Between equal rights force decides.

The hostile takeover of the RubyGems and Bundler code has been a long time coming. Corporate influence of major open-source Ruby projects has been growing for a while. This fiasco now makes the corporate control obvious. If you maintain a popular Ruby project and want to keep the F in FOSS, you should have had a democratic governance structure *yesterday*, one that is *explicitly* against corporate control of the project. You have to organize and fight to maintain independence. #ruby #rubygems

The UI/system design possibilities of the Fediverse are most interesting to me. Twitter/Mastodon's simple stream of single posts has been a great start for the socialization of network tech. Hopefully, we can build sites with designs for specific domains around shared learning and creativity.
