Connecting science, policy, and society to prepare for the discovery of life beyond Earth.

🗣️ Is communication necessary for intelligence?

If a species could think but never share its thoughts with others, even of the same species, would we still call it intelligent?

Much of what we define as intelligence depends on interaction, like language, symbols, or shared meaning. But what if intelligence could exist in complete isolation, silent and self-contained? Would we even be able to recognize it? 📡

🌍 Can intelligence exist on larger scales?

We often think of intelligence as belonging to individuals or species. But Earth’s biosphere regulates itself through complex feedback loops that stabilize the conditions for life.

Could this resemble a kind of planetary intelligence that is distributed, adaptive, and self-maintaining? If so, how might we detect similar forms of intelligence elsewhere?

🔎 What signs do you think large-scale intelligence would leave in the cosmic record?

🛸 Culture shapes how we imagine extraterrestrial life, often before science does.

The classic 'Green Alien', has become the default image rooted in early science fiction and popular culture.

Does this archetype bias our expectations towards intelligent, humanoid beings and shape public reactions to such a discovery?

How does the cultural template of the 'Green Alien' guide, or limit, our imagination and scientific openness when considering extraterrestrial life? 👽

🧠 When we imagine alien contact, we tend to picture intelligent beings.

But what if the first discovery is non-sentient life?

Would its extraterrestrial origin grant it greater moral value—or would we treat it like endangered species on Earth, where protections are uneven and exploitation persists?

This raises questions about whether scientific, commercial or national interests would endanger alien life, and if our current conservation ethics prepare us to protect life beyond Earth ⚖️

🛰️ Why plan for contact before we have a confirmed signal?

By the time a detection claim goes public, decisions about data, messaging, and verification will move very quickly. Waiting until that moment to decide who does what could create confusion, mistrust, and missed opportunities.

💬 What do you think should already be in place before any future announcement?

🌍 “Pray that there’s intelligent life somewhere out in space, ‘Cause there’s bugger all down here on Earth!” — Monty Python and the Meaning of Life.

Belief in extraterrestrial life is often stereotyped as social alienation.

💬 If alien life were confirmed, would believers feel validated and more connected—or would it deepen disengagement? Could it unite us, or reinforce isolation?

🎭 Why do stories matter for post detection?

Films, novels, and games have been preparing our imaginations for contact for decades. They shape what people expect, fear, and hope for long before any real announcement.

The SETI Post Detection Hub is interested in how creative work can help societies explore possible futures, practice empathy, and question simple narratives about contact outcomes.

💬 Which story about contact has influenced you the most, and why?

Responsible Discovery in Astrobiology: Lessons from Four Controversial Claims - Astrobiology

This paper examines four case studies of life-detection claims in astrobiology

Astrobiology

Rubin Observatory and the Galaxies

Starting in late 2025, when it begins the decade-long Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST), Rubin will capture skies like these in more detail than ever before.

We’re excited to embark on this project, and hope the results will provide new insights into public responses to disputed detection events, with crucial implications for science/risk communication in astrobiology, as well as for post-detection communication strategies and protocols.”
