Sunrise from this morning over Lake Superior. The sea smoke was awesome. It was such a great solstice sunrise and official start of winter.
It was a little sketchy getting to this spot. Verglas covered the basalt and my crampons need sharpening.

During the #covid lockdowns, the Australasian #cave community set up a cave #climate monitoring project. The idea was to get a 'baseline' climate for when the caves were less visited. Everything is done on a volunteer basis.
Over two years later, many caves are still collecting data, which I process and which is made publicly available on the www.ackma.org website.
Today I was processing climate data from the tropical North Queensland Chilligoe Caves. Here's a sneak peak.
2022 has been a bit cooler than recent years due to the strong La Nina and Indian Ocean Dipole, and that is reflected in the cave climate. In this example, you can also see the cave temperature cooling in late winter, and warming to a maximum in late summer.

@markcobb I see your perspective, but I see things differently.
IMO invading Ukraine was a mistake, but Putin's not a reckless man. He expected to win.
But now he needs to win. Otherwise he risks his position at home to say nothing of his ego.
Which is why all-out nuclear war is off the table. Because if Russia is ashes, if he is ashes, he doesn't win. He's a corpse.
Why destroy yourself when you can simply threaten nuclear war and reap the rewards without doing anything?
IMO, anyway.
@markcobb But I do agree with you on your last point. Putin is the only one that can end this.
How that happens I honestly don't know.
@markcobb I mean, first, that isn't even true. There are multiple other countries in Europe that were previously part of the USSR.
And as for Putin, honestly, I find your faith in his word surprising. He's a former KGB agent whose critics routinely end up dead in violent and suspicious circumstances.
He wants power and glory. To believe anything else is to be deeply, deeply naive, in my opinion.
