“A single unmuffled scooter crossing Paris at night can wake as many as 10,000 people.”

We seriously underestimate the impact of vehicle noise on urban livability & health. Cities aren’t noisy, engines are.

How Paris Is Waging a War on Noise Pollution

To combat the ill effects of urban noise pollution, Paris is deploying automated sensors and cracking down on the loudest vehicles.

Pedestrians, it should be our right to be distracted. It should be our right to walk and listen to music / look at the sky / cute dogs / snowflakes and not worry about getting killed. Nothing about that is dangerous except for CARS. Don't let them make you believe you are the problem.

Preventing common misconceptions about Bayes Factors

As more people have started to use Bayes Factors, we should not be surprised that misconceptions about Bayes Factors have become common. A r...

If I'm not just imagining things, it raises an interesting question.

While this constitutes an "improvement" in the technology in some manner of speaking, it's unclear whether this is a desirable development. It strikes me as a step that makes detecting more difficult without confering any significant epistemic improvement.

In other words, if the system has really been adjusted to avoid citing fake papers, this constitutes a deliberate choice to create more persuasive bullshit.

10 years after we created Registered Reports, the thing critics assured us would never (in a million years) happen has happened: @Nature is offering them.

The Registered Reports initiative just went up a gear and we are one step closer to eradicating publication bias and reporting bias from science.

Congratulations to all involved in achieving this milestone.

Nature welcomes Registered Reports

From this week, Nature will be publishing an additional type of research paper — designed to encourage rigour and replication.

Really nice article on sleep, dreams and language on BBC Future, including some of our work: https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20230213-how-people-dream-in-foreign-languages?
Why we can dream in more than one language

Sleep has a more powerful role in language-learning than was previously thought. What does this reveal about our night-time brain?

Still no introduction, but at least some #mosstodon content #muenster
