Understanding how people think about and work with data. PhD Candidate in Informatics at the University of Illinois.

Theory (which is mine) (and what it is, too): Enshittification has led directly to acceptance of LLMs, because the public is already used to software that is unfit for purpose.

Man Alarmed to Discover His Smart Vacuum Was Broadcasting a Secret Map of His House

One man's robot vacuum was constantly communicating with its manufacturer, sending a detailed 3D map of his house halfway across the world.

Ooo, I've been itching to give this speech for ages. WHY is Canada relying on US Homeland Security to approve Verified Travellers in Canada? Why are we contracting out to a country that discriminates against trans, 2 spirit, gender nonbinary and intersex Canadians and doesn't provide service in French. Here is my RANT calling for the creation of a made-in-Canada verified traveller program, without American oversight. Time to patriate airport security, and give all Canadians the right to apply for life in the fast lane. https://youtu.be/yInsw13pkI4?si=c41OK4OqGq9gGmHv #Canada #SenateofCanada #NEXUS #HomelandSecurity #ElbowsUp https://youtu.be/yInsw13pkI4?si=c41OK4OqGq9gGmHv

The Death of the Open Web?

It is a peculiar kind of tragedy to watch the thing you love be dismantled for parts, sold off as scrap, and then have the very people doing the dismantling throw up their hands and ask who could have possibly let this happen. The web I fell in love with is fading, and I think we all know who is holding the smoking gun.

This is why I believe we're going to need better tools for reading and exploring codebases

"Writing code is easy. Once you have a solution in mind, and have mastered the syntax of your favorite programming language, writing code is easy. Having an LLM write entire functions for you? Even easier. But the hard part isn’t the writing. It’s the reading. It’s the time it takes to load the mental model of the system into your head. That’s where all the cost really is."

What does "tough on crime" actually mean?

To some people, it means "Reducing the murder rate, reducing the robbery rate, and making the streets safer."♥️👍🏿

To other people, it means "Intimidating, harassing, and shooting more innocent Black people." Which ironically, makes the murder rate go up.
🙃🙂

Why is the mayor of Baltimore not viewed as "Tough on crime?" He's reduced the murder rate significantly. It's harder to commit murders when he's around.

Why is the mayor of Chicago not seen as "Tough on crime?" He's reduced murders much more than Rahm Emmanuel.

Which definition are we using?

If the mayor of Baltimore suddenly announced a "crackdown on crime!" And started stopping and frisking every young Black man in the city, and formed a SCORPION unit of balaclava wearing cops that killed one innocent Black boy a week, but the citywide murder rate went *up* 20%, some would say "He's tough on crime!"🤡

Talking to my son about college made me realize how much expectations have changed.

Boomers could have a good career with a high school diploma. Gen X and Millennials needed a college degree. For Gen Z, no amount of education can guarantee a good life, thanks to AI and Boomer decisions about the economy.

Recently former Google CEO, Eric Schmidt, chastised Silicon Valley for spending billions chasing AGI instead of practical applications of AI.

China’s government agrees and is pushing local usage of AI in practical applications such as grading high-school entrance exams, improving weather forecasts, and advising farmers on crop rotation, not achieving AGI.

Which path will win?
