The Death of the Open Web?

It is a peculiar kind of tragedy to watch the thing you love be dismantled for parts, sold off as scrap, and then have the very people doing the dismantling throw up their hands and ask who could have possibly let this happen. The web I fell in love with is fading, and I think we all know who is holding the smoking gun.

@ajroach42 Hard agree. My only note is that funding the Servo engine dev team (and eventually standards folks) is IMO our best chance to replace the GoogWeb with a new Open Web.

@trevorflowers I've heard about Servo in the past, but I hadn't looked into it in any detail.

It does look like a promising project.

@ajroach42 I'm pretty happy with Servo! I do encourage supporting them!

I don't think they're doing much to reduce the complexity of web standards, & I see some webdevs pointing to them to say we don't need to rethink the JS-centric web. But Servo's striving to support the web of today, not the web of tomorrow, which is vital to have! And they're putting A+ effort into that.

I'm saying that Servo will be a part of replacing the GoogWeb, but it should only be part.

@trevorflowers

@alcinnz Oh, I have many ideas about what we should do. 😸 I mainly tout only Servo because it has a relatively simple narrative and its success would go a long way toward a future I want.

@trevorflowers Fair enough!

I just thought @ajroach42 in particular would want the additional nuance.
