Denying Same-Sex Marriage Is Unconstitutional, Japanese High Court Says

The court, however, does not have the power to overturn the current marriage law, which has been interpreted to restrict marriage as between a man and a woman.

Does anyone have tips for good resources on how to structure your PhD dissertation (monograph)? Particularly struggling with how I want to write my Introduction (and what should go under Theory chapter vs Introduction).

“I couldn’t move for a postdoc. Fellowship reviewers shouldn’t have penalized me for it”, writes Shanta Hejmadi for “Science”.

3 more days until I submit my first draft to my supervisors! There is a mix of stress/anxiety (that I still want to finish a few more parts so there is text) and excitement (then I can do so much... mainly rest!!!😴) Now there is a new feeling also emerging - actually looking forward to trying to read through the whole thing that I have been writing for more than 5 years (!) 📖✏💡

@KeriFacer welcome to mastodon 🤗

“Even a year ago, the conversation on fossil fuel phase-out at COP28 was completely unthinkable,” Jonas Kuehl, IISD

“This is the first COP where the words fossil fuels are actually included in the draft decision. This is the beginning of the end of the fossil fuel era.” Mohamed Adow, Power Shift Africa

As the COP28 negotiations drag on, I think it's essential to recognize that, regardless of the results, change IS happening.

Even if COP28 fails, it has changed the conversation on fossil fuels

Countries at the COP28 climate summit are still struggling to reach a deal on phasing out fossil fuels, but even having discussions on an end to the main cause of global warming is huge progress, say campaigners and researchers

Is anyone here aware of any upcoming sustainability conferences in Europe? (Or Japan) or conferences elsewhere that has an online participation option? I know the Nordic Environmental Social Sciences conference is in June but can't make it to that one... ☹️ https://ness2024.fi/

@mhbastian Slight edit on my comment during the afternoon seminar - Attack on Titan is at least one more successful Japanese manga that is set in a dystopic setting. But still quite interesting to think about how small this genre feels compared to Western pop culture - but again it certainly makes sense if we think about it as a reflection of the Christian tradition. Anyway thank you again for the many insights 🤗
Feel grateful for being able to attend the Archipelago Lecture at KTH yesterday by @mhbastian ! Much food for thought on what we mean with 'slowness' and how to think about time more relationally 🍐

I assume the push against a hybrid option (if that is what happened) was to bring people to the area.

But with steadily hotter summers, high fuel costs, and people unable to travel for a myriad of reasons, this would be terrible justification.

And as a single counter point, I would have attended in-person if hybrid had been offered (combining with a research trip). As it is, I’m an established member of the English-speaking science communication community in Japan, and I felt unable to attend.
