A thing that a lot of people are missing in the replies here is that it's not that this stuff doesn't matter, but that people have limited time and energy, so when you're a junior it's worth de-prioritising this stuff in favour of things that matter more
Unpopular advice for junior engineers:
- Work in-person at a project-based consultancy (regardless of tech stack)
- Use open source, but do not try contributing
- Editor fiddling, vim, exotic terminals are a total waste of time
- Anything beyond "git 101" doesn't matter
