Escapism mode on. Toots about #sewing, crafting and libraries for now.

Officially #sewing for winter 🥶 I'm wearing a #monroeturtleneck (free Tessuti pattern) that I made of striped cotton jersey and my super cozy #wikstenunfoldingjacket . I can tell these are going to get lots of wear and I may need to make another for rotation (esp. the top).

The jacket is XS and lengthened by 20cm to accommodate a long light down jacket underneath and it's the first fully-reversible garment I have ever made.

I used a combo of cotton rib knit from @darncheapfabrics Fitzroy and printed cotton (almost like fine corduroy) that some lovely person gifted to me a few years ago when we first moved into our current suburb. She and her husband are cobblers and have a shop in Kingsville. I went over to have a few pairs resoled, had a long chat with her, and when I mentioned I was learning how to sew, she gave me a bunch of beautiful cotton and wool fabrics that she had been wanting to de-stash.

Keep warm, Melbourne!

I also drafted a jumper for Bobbie and used this striped jersey left over from sewing a turtleneck for myself. This is just a test so I can make her a proper jumper for winter. I wish my dog can tell me what she thinks because I’m not that happy with how it turned out. I might give up and just buy a staffy-shaped jumper pattern somewhere. Please send recommendations or drafting suggestions.

I sewed a few projects since I last posted but am particularly happy with this Kalle Shirtdress (pattern by Closet Core). I’m @sewing work clothes for the cold months ahead so I lengthened this by 20cm. New things I learned with this project is #sewing a popover button placket and properly improvising inseam pockets. I was surprised the dress version of this does not have pockets (not counting the chest patch pocket).

I can’t think of a kind of garment right now that would not be better with pockets. Underwear? Swimwear? Dancewear? You can’t put pockets on a tutu, right?

It took me quite a while to put together this #allwellfullmoonbag out of fabric scraps from past sewing projects, and struggled with bias binding. Nevertheless, I'm happy with the outcome--might make again.

While out and about in #Footscray this arvo

Today I will learn how to sew/install zippers and buttonholes properly. The 3-hour workshop is at the [Gaye Abandon] School of Sewing and Upcycling in Footscray. https://schoolofsewingandupcycling.com.au/product/zippers-and-buttonholes-sewing-workshop/

I’ve made a pair of zip fly pants before (see photo) but not without struggle and a round of unpicking stitches. And I’ve always messed up invisible zips. Hoping to pick up a few techniques today and stop running away from patterns that require invisible and lapped zips. Huzzah!

#introduction
Hello, from the innerwest suburbs of #Melbourne #Naarm #WurundjeriLand. I love #sewing (mostly clothes from indie pattern design companies) and currently studying #InformationManagement and #librarystudies. I've had a long career teaching #literature in international and higher education, but burnout finally got me after teaching remotely over the pandemic lockdowns for almost two years. I am making the move into another career, and prioritising work-life balance, opportunities to gain new perspectives, and develop new skills.
Hoping to connect with fellow #sewists #booknerds #librarians
