The governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS, the organization that gives out the Oscars) have met today to discuss their "belated and tepid" response to the beating and detention of Oscar-winning Palestinian documentarian Hamdan Ballal. Leading members of the Academy including Olivia Colman, Javier Bardem, Emma Thompson, Ava DuVernay and Adam McKay signed a letter demanding a more forceful response to Ballal's treatment by Israeli authorities, saying the original statement "fell far short of the sentiments this moment calls for."
