RSpace is a collaborative research data management platform that interoperates with many tools, services and digital infrastructure researchers and their research organizations already use. It is designed to enable frictionless workflows for the creation and management of FAIR (Findable Accessible Interoperable Reusable) data across the entire research cycle when researchers plan their research, record experimental data, keep track of physical samples, report on their work and share it.

Thanks to everyone contributing to our 8th RSpace open-source office hour. ๐ŸŽ™๏ธ
Our guests Titusz Pan and Martin Etzrodt (@ISCC Foundation) walked us through the ISCC ISO-standard for fingerprinting and identifying content. Rather than first registering an ID with an authority, you compute a fingerprint straight from the content itself, so you can find an asset and its provenance again even after metadata is stripped. It is already applied in bioimaging as part of the the BioCode project with Leiden University.
On our side, we shared progress on an RSpace initiative to give research instruments persistent identifiers. The interesting part was discussing where the two could meet, for example signing data right at the microscope, and how together they build trust in research data in the age of AI. We also shared the latest from the RSpace project, including a new community templates resource.

Lots of generalist ELNs "support chemistry". In practice that means merely displaying structures, while the actual work happens elsewhere. We took a different path: an open chemistry engine (Ketcher, OpenBabel, Indigo) that gives us and our community the agency to build real chemistry workflows, in the notebook and beyond.

Chemistry in RSpace: What a Year of Open-Source Development Looks Like

A year after transitioning RSpace's chemistry tools to an open-source stack, we look at what has been built since: an open chemistry codebase on GitHub, PubChem compound import directly from documents, and stoichiometry tables connected to inventory management. We also preview what comes next, including chemistry-aware metadata in exports to generalist and domain repositories.

RSpace Changelog

Keep up to date with new releases of RSpace!

In our latest blog post, a biochemistry PhD shares how RSpace templates and forms improved their research documentation through structured entries, faster documentation, searchable records across 3 years of PhD work.

Their templates are now available in a new community template repository along with other examples for documents, inventory items and vocabularies for use in real research workflows.
