Auf der diesjährigen re:publica habe ich unter dem Titel “I’m sorry HAL, I won’t let you do that.” über “KI” und die politische und soziale Einordnung dieses Narratives sprechen.
Vor der Konferenz selbst habe ich mit dem RBB24 Inforadio ein ca halbstündiges Interview eher allgemein zu KI geführt, welches man sich hier in der Mediathek anhören kann (lokaler Mirror, falls depubliziert wird hier).

Eine Anmerkung: Leider habe ich für genau die Erzählung, die ich für den Vortrag gewählt habe nur auf Bücher von männlichen Autoren zugegriffen. Es gab auf der Shortlist ein paar Bücher von Autor*innen (z.B. Automating Inequality), aber in der beschränkten Zeit, die mir für den Vortrag zur Verfügung stand, habe ich das nicht zusammenbringen können. Auch wenn ich hinter allen Büchern und Artikeln, die ich empfohlen habe, stehe, ist das trotzdem eine in der Hinsicht ausbaufähige Leistung.

I love how so much of the AI debate is on things like:
* Will AI take people's jobs?
* Will AI destroy creativity?
* Will AI take over the world?
* Will AI be used to make people poorer?
And not:
* Will corporations that use AI get rid of people's jobs?
* Will corporations that use AI destroy creativity?
* Will corporations that use AI try to take over the world?
* Will corporations that use AI make people poorer?
Because these LLMs and machine learning systems and so forth aren't just wandering around randomly out there - they're owned by corporations. The corporations are the ones putting them to use. The executives that run those corporations are the ones making the decisions to pay people less, to increase their profits, to make creative people act as subeditors for LLMs.
It's the corporations, and the ethics-free systems that govern them, that cause these things. They're the ones pushing to have more AI.
The rest of us would be happy just having a bit more humanity in the world.

The objective of this article is to define more precisely the field of research into the automation of communication, which is currently only vaguely discernible. The central thesis is that, in order to be able to grasp the transformation of the media environment associated with the automation of communication, the view must be broadened from the “direct interaction of humans and machines” to “societal communication”. Broadening our perspective as such allows us to ask how the dynamics of societal communication as a whole change when “communicative AI” becomes part of societal communication. To support this thesis, the article first takes a closer look at the automation of communication as a phenomenon. Against this background, the concept of communicative AI is then developed in more detail as a “sensitizing concept” that sensitizes to both the breadth and depth of the phenomenon. On this basis, the bridging concept of the “hybrid figuration” is developed in order to grasp the agency of communicative AI and to be able to connect to “definitive concepts” of social science and media and communication research. It becomes apparent that with communicative AI as a field of research, the basic concepts of communication and media research—“communication” and “media”—are themselves challenged. The article is concluded by a conclusion that shows the research perspectives resulting from such an approach.
