I'm weird.

Comment I saw on a post about the new Discord age verification nonsense:

"Teen-by-default seems to be a popular choice these times among the rich"

Fucking LOL.

Reason Discord is in the news rn: https://techcrunch.com/2026/02/09/discord-to-roll-out-age-verification-next-month-for-full-access-to-its-platform/

Particular point of note:

"It’s worth noting that Discord disclosed last October that around 70,000 users may have had sensitive data, such as their government ID photos, exposed after hackers breached a third-party vendor that the platform uses for age-related appeals."

Discord to roll out age verification next month for full access to its platform | TechCrunch

All users will be put into a "teen-appropriate experience" by default unless they prove that they are adults.

@pip True - from their corpo-spew:

"Quick deletion: Identity documents submitted to our vendor partners are deleted quickly— in most cases, immediately after age confirmation."

'In most cases' and 'deleted quickly' are going to be doing a lot of heavy lifting here...

Also, didn't they have a breach of user data recently? 🤔

@dryad.technology Not according to their press release on the matter.

"Discord users can choose to use facial age estimation or submit a form of identification to its vendor partners, with more options coming in the future. Additionally, Discord will implement its age inference model, a new system that runs in the background to help determine whether an account belongs to an adult, without always requiring users to verify their age."

@Gargron @[email protected] Rather stupidly, a lot of software support and wiki's are now contained only on Discord, which has been a stupid move to be clear. Even purely social communities for almost anything host on Discord now.

The internet is a lonelier place for all the social interactivity it has hoovered up.

Time will tell if Discord have pointed both barrels at their feet and pulled the trigger... But nobody seems happy with the decision.

@barnesmaurice @fesshole But what about all those funds that were promised to fix the blasted holes?

"£1.6 billion investment to tackle scourge of potholes to be delivered to councils from next month as PM tells councils to put cash to use" - 23rd March 2025.

Yet what do they do? Throw in some asphalt, tamp it down, job done. It's usually back to a hole in a few weeks, a month if you're lucky. We have one that has had 6 repairs and it's still a gaping maw in to the depths of the earth...

@sundogplanets New Zealand Road Safety adverts are also in another league and do not play around either (see also Aussie ones too).

@Ambraven “Unlike Google, XScreenSaver will never offer you advice, as it cannot talk. In the event that XScreenSaver does talk, we ask you to ignore its advice. As we do with Google.”

Brilliant!

@fesshole I don’t think I’ve ever managed to open a packet of bacon - I just get a knife and slice it open like a maniac…

The sheer amount of forks that aim to remove a lot of the 'additions' (aka bullshit stochastic parrot hype train features) that Mozilla have added to Firefox would be a wakeup call for them, I would have thought...
