Biodiversity at Gatwick Airport (opinions do not represent official positions of GAL). We'd be alright if the wind was in our sails. Trustee for @mfgwp

Back to the dietary issues of climate change: how will our descendents view our individual and collective efforts (or lack thereof of?). What things can we do differently today? https://www.instagram.com/p/Cn35OYcKxiE/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=

Rachel Bicker on Instagram: "Back to the dietary issue of climate change: there is an undeniable fact that the countries consuming more calorie-rich foods are putting more strain on the environment and the climate. The current system means the children born this last decade will see at least a 2°C rise in their lifetimes. Switching to a more plant-based diet (it doesn't even have to be 100%) is overall lower in carbon, reduces land-take and has proven benefits for individual health (on average reducing premature mortality globally by 10%). Socially, it also raises awareness through dialogue and helps change thinking around other global resources. What it comes down to for me, is how will our descendents view our individual and collective efforts (or lack of?) #TheClimateBook #climatecrisis #ClimateEmergency"

Winter habitat works = completed mate! Ahead of the game this year with the Roots Upwards team, who grafted in some pretty extreme weather conditions...💪🌦️🌊❄️ We're trialling different techniques including conservation laying of trees and thorn, cluttered vs open glades, and scalloping our new bird ringing rides. The excitement of Blackthorn management never gets old 😁 #BiodiversityGatwick #WildlifeConservation #HabitatManagement @GGPWildlife
My #BirdTrack year summary - not entirely comprehensive because I also submit some casual records via @iRecordWildlife, but I really like these infographics by the @_BTO @BirdTrack Most of this is work I carried out with @hawkeye_tom #wildliferecording #BiodiversityGatwick #birdmonitoring

Public service announcement to all small birds - if you fly in to watch a group of bird ringers at their processing station you are likely to get some new bling... Our 4th Black Redstart ever to be ringed at Gatwick, and by far the most obliging 😂 All birds ringed under licence #BiodiversityGatwick #birdringing #btobirdringing #birding #wildliferecording
Diet, food waste & agriculture are key to tackling the climate crisis, as better management of all three can repair the carbon cycle. Food systems produce 30% of all greenhouse gas & are the leading driver of biodiversity loss, nutrient pollution and poor health. Conscious food choice is something readily within our power. By affecting demand & therefore policies and markets, we make strides towards more sustainable systems.

Yesterday, a gap in the foul weather led to some important clearance works with the #GatwickGreenspace reserve managers. We did it, we cleared them christmas treats right up. And opened up a woodland glade. #BiodiversityGatwick #ConservationVolunteering #SussexWildlifeTrust

Some of you may have seen Elon Musk's endorsement of Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s crazy antivax conspiracy theories today.

Over at post.news, I just posted a long-form piece about this, and about how science education needs to adapt to online disinformation.

Please a look. If you like it, boost it there or here or — if you dare — over on the birdsite.

A throwback to summer #Odonata surveying (#dragonflies and #damselflies) at Gatwick Airport. Our sites are generally good for this group of insects, but with the extreme #drought conditions during 2022, there are likely to have been winners and losers. Find out how we compare with other nature reserves around Sussex, South East England. http://biodiversitygatwick.blogspot.com/2022/12/aerodome-of-dragon.html?m=1

Aerodome of the Dragon

Of all the UK airports, could Gatwick be the one with the highest diversity of Odonata (dragonflies and damselflies)? I imagine strong conte...
