#MinCup24 rhodochrosite vs calcite

Got to be calcite: a great mineral - it can grow igneously, sedimentarily, metamorphically, or biologically; it's a wonderful recorder of processes and time πŸ€“ , it has unmatched diversity and beauty of crystal forms AND it can do pink even better than rhodochrosite!🀩

You can browse endless pages of calcite crystal forms 🀩 πŸ₯° here:

If you're still reeling from the defeat of #Copper, now is your chance to keep copper in the running in #MinCup24. Vote for #Atacamite, a copper chloride hydroxide which in some locations can be a minor ore for copper.

Vote #Atacamite! www.mineralcup.org/2024/vote/r1m07

#Atacamite -used as a green pigment since antiquity on ancient Egyptian paintings, illuminated manuscripts, sculptures, oil paintings or here in ancient Buddhist Kizil Caves in China (3rd-8th century) pulls ahead of #Stibnite -used as kohl as cosmetics since ancient Egypt for my #MinCup24 art vote.

Recognise this? Yes, that's #Atacamite! Atacamite can form as a corrosion product of copper alloys so is found coating many bronze statues including the Statue of Liberty.

Round 1 Match 7 β€” Mineral Cup

Stibnite vs Atacamite

Mineral Cup

Atacamite has been used as a green-blue pigment in cultural artefacts for millennia and across continents.
#Atacamite wins the art vote for today!

Some examples:
Analysis found atacamite in the statue of Our Lady of Copacabana, Titicaca Lake, Bolivia; in numerous European paintings and frescoes from the Medieval era; and in decorative artefacts excavated from the Palace of Apries built in Upper Egypt over 2590 years ago!

Round 1 Match 7 β€” Mineral Cup

Stibnite vs Atacamite

Mineral Cup
Atacamite commonly forms in arid saline conditions, thus named after the Atacama Desert, Chile, where the largest crystals have been found.
Away from deserts, atacamite is even known to condense directly out of the vapours of Mount Vesuvius, Italy, and is suspected to even form in deep sea vents.
Being a secondary mineral, atacamite also forms as a corrosion product of copper alloys, meaning it is found on the surface of many bronze statues old and new.
Vote #Atacamite!

What connects the driest place on Earth, the volcano that smothered Pompeii, and our memorials to the great and good? That's right! It's #Atacamite!

Round 1 Match 7 β€” Mineral Cup

Stibnite vs Atacamite

Mineral Cup
People, do not vote for #Kyanite over #Calcite.
Don't do it
Calcite is maybe the most important mineral on this planet for all life.
Do you like being alive? Thank calcite, kyanite has nothing to do with it.
Vote early, vote once, and vote for Calcite!

Vote in Quarterfinal Match 3 β€” Mineral Cup

It's a classic pairing familiar from introductory geology labs. Will you pick your champion by dribbling acid on bubbly Calcite, or test for directional hardness scratching Kyanite? Both can't wait to whisper stories of their past, but only one can go on to tell its tale in the semi-finals.

Mineral Cup

Inconceivably, kyanite is ahead of calcite. If the gargantuan role in art history - all of marble art and limestone sculpture, chalk drawing, large amounts of painting as pigment and extender- isn’t enough…
