One of my favorite people of all time is @mrscienceteach --- a middle school teacher who has led efforts in his school to "go gradeless."

That leads me to the question I'm wrestling with today: Will we ever get away from a culture of grading in schools?

Grant Wiggins once said that "Grades are utterly useless...but they aren't going away."

Is that just a truth that we have to accept? If we know the damage grades can do to learning, why do we continue to tolerate them?

@bertwood : Honestly, I think it is all about transparency. Trying to educate as many people as we can about the misinformation that surrounds them.

Most of the people that I know that fall for this kind of stuff are genuinely good people who trust the news they are consuming without question.

That's the problem: We have to encourage people to question everything that they once thought they could accept without question.

What worries me is that is a really tough process.

@mguhlin :

Right now, Miguel, I'm thinking about using the two spaces for different purposes.

I want this space to be about conversations for me. Deeper thinking. More genuine connections.

And Twitter will be simple sharing of resources.

That's what it has really become for me anyway in the last few years. I schedule Tweets to maintain a presence, but I never really go there looking for conversations anymore.

What about you? Will you stay in both places?

@bertwood :

Yep. And my guess is that distrust is sown for the same reason. If we discredit those groups, we can privatize them --- and that lines someone's pockets.

It's sad to see communities fractured in that way.

@plugusin Could there be a particular edu hashtag that carries with it a mutually-agreed charter of purpose?

@CuBachOCeiBach :

I love this idea. Lemme sit with it for a bit and if I come up with some thinking, I'll share it with you.

I'd really like to try to figure this out simply because I think a group with like minds on the purpose of the space would be far more fulfilling.

Thanks for thinking alongside me.

This probably describes me better than any intro

@bertwood : Yep. Distrust of institutions is a very real issue here.

What breaks my heart as a teacher is distrust of schools.

Teachers quite literally sacrifice for their communities, so being doubted and criticized makes it difficult to continue.

The reward was never our salaries -- it was the respect of our communities. And that has dwindled.

@plugusin My #EduGlow was being approached by a student whose teacher was using a new student-centered strategy in class. The student could tell that her teacher had learned the strategy from me. She thanked me for “sharing the good”. #EduTooter
