Francesca Albanese: “Israel commits crimes like it breathes. The only way to protect not only Palestinians, but also Israelis, is to stop it. I have investigated the involvement of the private sector in the economy of occupation, which has now become the economy of genocide, and that genocide does not stop because there are people doing business and making a lot of money from it."

Francesca Albanese, UN Special Rapporteur on the Occupied Palestinian Territories: ‘Israel commits crimes like it breathes. It must be stopped’

The Italian lawyer maintains that the ‘genocide’ in Gaza, of which there is ‘overwhelming’ evidence, does not stop because so many are profiting from it. She will present a new report next week listing the names of companies involved

Today I went to a freecycling party hosted by a friend! We all brought clothes/books/art supplies/etc we didn't want, perused everyone else's stuff and took what we wanted, and then divided any remaining items into categories to donate (e.g. one person takes all the art supplies to our local used craft supply store, another person takes all the clothes to a local thrift store, etc).

It was very fun! And I never would have thought of throwing a party like that, so I'm posting about it here to pass along the idea to others :)

As someone who is totally blind, the Fediverse is the only place where I have ever been able to follow people such as photographers, artists, or even those who post pictures of their cats or the food they ate. The reason is that most of them use alt text. They take the time to describe the images that my screen reader can't recognise. Some write the descriptions themselves, and others use tools such as altbot. Some worry that their descriptions aren't good enough, especially when they are new at this. Let me assure you, not only are they good enough, they are extremely appreciated! If the rest of the world thought as you did, it would be a much better place. Don't hesitate to ask if you're unsure of something, but never think that we don't notice your effort.

New resolution to do something positive for the world every time I find myself enraged by "the news".

So far today I have joined a nature conservation organisation, donated money to #Ukraine and spent an hour researching wildflowers for a bare piece of ground nearby to attract solitary bees, hoverflies + other pollinators that I will finalise planting this spring.

At this rate the world will be a much better place by next Christmas.

And it turns out that it really does help.

The World Economic Forum recently released their Future of #Jobs report - and it's again a comprehensive, global and insightful piece of analysis that should be required reading for all future-focused leaders.

My key take-aways are:

➡️ The impact of emerging technologies like #AI, #ML, #robotics and #automation can't be understated in terms of how they are disrupting the labour market - they are having, and will continue to have, a profound impact across the economy. They are driving shifts in both creating and displacing roles, however ...

➡️ Analytical and hashtag#creative thinking skills, alongside resilience, flexibility and adaptability are also highly sought after. The winning combination for job-seekers will be to have BOTH emerging technologies skills, as well as the critical capabilities to apply (or not apply) them to particular domains and industry contexts.

➡️ The economic profile for Australia generally tracks with global trends, but some key differences I identified were the stronger desire from Australian businesses for immigration changes (e.g. to allow more immigration) and more flexibility in hiring and firing (e.g. looser employment regulation). The broadening of digital access is a major macro-trend shaping employment - and as I've said for many years, I see major economic benefits from greater adoption of #RemoteWork in Australia, where we have very long commutes.

Riots, cartwheels, and brains interrupted

Becoming a parent has made me a more patient person. For anyone who knows me in real life, I fully appreciate that it’s hard to imagine what a less patient version of me would look like,…

If you're doing anything with AI and education, it's well worth checking out Maggie Appleton's post here https://maggieappleton.com/lm-sketchbook

The cause/consequence claim investigator is really slick.

I have a love/hate relationship with sites like this that make me (even more) desperate to rebuild my entire portfolio, change the way I document my work, want to reconsider my entire employment path . . .

Just to close the Mastodon loop

@maggie

Really great work. Thanks for putting it out there.
