Leavitt changed astronomy. She figured out new ways to measure a star’s distance from Earth & her work helped determine the universe is expanding.
Her boss, Edward Pickering, published her findings UNDER HIS NAME. Later, Shapley used her findings to determine distances around the Milky Way w/o credit.
Leavitt’s work is still used today. Next time you hear about famous men in #science share her story. #HistoryRemix

My view - for a pluralist society to work and not descend into sectarian strife (what with all the different religions etc) it must be under the unifying umbrella of a secular state. Religion and state should be separate - that doesn’t mean religious people can’t be in government. But that they cannot seek to promulgate their religious views through that power. Otherwise - well, that’s theocracy. And that’s dangerous IMHO

Today, jets in formation screamed over our peaceful bayside suburb. Two shaking little dogs wrapped themselves round my legs and I managed to continue stirring a roux while thinking about people who need to fear these sounds. Cannot work out why jet practice happens over a busy city at 11 ish on a Monday when the wind is blowing a gale and the rain is pelting down!

MFWRegular reminder Pentecostal churches & far-right political parties don’t care much about equal marriage, transgender rights or abortion healthcare.
They care about 2 things only:
- control of all not pale, stale & male; &
- stirring up hate to manipulate voters.
They’re now attacking LGBTIQA+ & women’s rights only as they know they can’t (publicly) demonise black people now as they used to to achieve the same aims (Pauline Hanson’s failure is proof of this).
