The farmers said that the vanilla beans will last "several decades" this way.

When a recipe calls for part of a vanilla bean, or seeds. we remove part of one from the jar. Wet beans are more concentrated than dried.

For vanilla bean extract, we use a Pipette to extract a few drops: the extract a very concentrated.

And while it is $$$-ive, we have effectively a lifetime of real vanilla to use.

We also enjoy sometimes adding a drop into café such as espresso.

We purchased 1/2 kilo of vanilla beans (we ordered in advance) from a farm in Tahiti as part of a solar eclipse expedition.

As per the farms recommendation, we put the beans into a canning jar filled 1/2 way with Everclear https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Everclear a flavorless green alcohol that is 95% alcohol by volume. The jar is kept with a tight lid, well out of sunlight in a cool dark cupboard corer.

The vanilla beans remain as soft and supple as when they were first harvested.
