“The PayPal Mafia”: Meet the South African Oligarchs Surrounding Trump, from Elon Musk to Peter Thiel

President Trump’s targeting of South Africa is clearly tied to his influential adviser Elon Musk and a coterie of wealthy U.S. oligarchs, “all of whom in some way or other grew up in South Africa as children.” These men are known as the “PayPal mafia” due to their involvement in the founding of the financial tech company PayPal, explains reporter Chris McGreal. McGreal, a former South Africa correspondent for The Guardian, outlines Musk’s pro-apartheid and neo-Nazi family history, which appears to form the basis of his adherence to a right-wing ideology that believes white South Africans “are the victims of the end of apartheid” and at risk of a “white genocide.”

I’m starting a book club with some friends. This will be my first time and I think the first time for the 4 other members. Any tips to keep it fun and engaging? We will be reading Mood Machine by Liz Pelly.
Does anyone else struggle with what to post about anymore? I want to engage in this space but these times are leaving me at a loss for words. I hope you are all hanging in there. I'm glad you're here and I hope we can all keep in touch. In terms of music news I wanted to share that the fantastic French field recording tape label Presque Tout recently released a new batch of tapes and one of my dawn chorus recordings is on it. Hope you enjoy it if you listen. https://presquetout.bandcamp.com/album/tape-series-007

Balmat

Balmat is a new label with a cloudy outline. Jointly shepherded by Albert Salinas and Philip Sherburne, two friends living in Cardedeu, Catalonia, and on the Balearic island of Menorca, Balmat grew out of Lapsus Radio, a weekly show on Spain’s Radio 3. Balmat’s mission is simple: to foster new ideas, expand upon personal obsessions, and put enveloping sounds out into the world.

After a misty start to the day, there was a beautiful sunset at WWT Welney this evening - and the skies were full of honking whooper swans and their calls 🥰
