How to slow down scientific progress

"Leo Szilard—the physicist who first conceived of the nuclear chain reaction and who urged the US to undertake the Manhattan Project—also wrote fiction. His book of short stories, The Voice of the Dolphins, contains a story “The Mark Gable Foundation,” dated 1948."

You can see the full thing at this link, but I've also taken a screenshot of an excerpt. 😬 🤔 😢

How to slow down scientific progress, according to Leo Szilard

“Science would become something like a parlor game. There would be fashions. Those who followed the fashion would get grants”

A tutorial on Plug-and-Play Models for Computational Imaging is out in IEEE Signal Processing Magazine. It traces PnP roots, describes major variants, summarizes key results, and discusses imaging applications.

Stein’s lemma is a surprisingly simple yet useful characterization of the Gaussian distribution. Enables to derive sharp bounds for convergence rates in the central limit theorem in various metrics. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stein%27s_lemma

Twitter suspends Mastodon account, prevents sharing links

On Dec 16, Twitter suspended our @joinmastodon account after we shared a link to the newly registered Mastodon account of @ElonJet, an account that broadcasts public flight path data of Elon Musk’s private jet, which was previously suspended from Twitter itself. At the same time, accounts of multiple journalists from major publications such as CNN, The New York Times, The Washington Post, as well as various independent journalists, were likewise suspended for either linking to the account itself or talking about the event.
