Matthew Cassel’s Along the Green line docu series is confirming just how widespread Palestinian-hate and genocidal support is in the Israeli society (with few exceptions ofc). Some of the claims heard there are mind boggling. Exceptional work:

Mark Carney’s decision to rescind Canada’s digital services tax is a cowardly move that shows Trump he can be pressured into making trade concessions.

It also shows how much Carney is willing to give into corporate demands, and particular those of the tech industry.

New draft General Purpose AI code of practice from the European Commission v naive on continued separation of AI systems & search engines (see Google, Perplexity etc…). Shaping Europe’s digital future
Kicking off programme attendance at #ecrea2024 with a CLP session on „Approaches to media regulation“. @p_charis starts off with highlighting the importance of EU-level „European Media Freedom Act“ (#EMFA), often being overshadowed by the #DSA. Chris argues that it might reinforce what I call the „platform paradox“, that regulation seeking to curb negative effects of platforms is actually lending them more and more power.

My latest story for the Globe & Mail newspaper: cheap armed drones, manufactured by the likes of UAE, Turkey, Iran & China, are causing mayhem across Africa.

Sudan, Libya, Ethiopia, Somalia, Burkina Faso & Nigeria, have all seen drone massacres in recent times. Co-authored with legendary journo Geoff York, we cite five atrocities caused by drones that now cost as little as $1 million.

Also features survivors of a Feb 19 drone massacre of 30 civilians in Ethiopia.

Cheap imported drones fuel a surge of deaths in Africa

The proliferation of easy-to-obtain drones is fuelling conflicts, increasing civilian casualties and filling the skies with new dangers

The Globe and Mail

The confidence instilled in African leaders (who are giddy with glee after drone manufacturers sell them the idea of swift victory) is leading to the cancellation of peace talk initiatives & the prolonging of wars.

And of course, an increase in human suffering.

Anyone following the Gaza onslaught fueled campus protests, will have heard denunciations of corporations such as bulldozer manufacturer, Caterpillar.

In the same vein, my thread on drone manufacturer Baykar:

I'm addressing this topic, as it's relevant again and it got erased with my previous instance: When the discussion of affirmative action in journalism is brought up, some believe that the sole objective of it is ensuring employment and growth opportunities for journalists of all backgrounds. They couldn't be more wrong. By diversifying a newsroom, you ensure greater care for ethics & sensitivities of a broader and all encompassing audience.

Holy shit. Google fired 28 workers for protesting against its $1.2 billion contract with the IDF. Solidarity with these workers of conscience.

STATEMENT from Google workers with the No Tech for Apartheid campaign on Google’s mass, retaliatory firings of workers:

This evening, Google indiscriminately fired over two dozen workers, including those among us who did not directly participate in yesterday’s historic, bicoastal 10-hour sit-in protests. This flagrant…

Assuming all goes well, in Q4/2024 we will be teaching the course “Introduction to Cloud as Infrastructure: The effects of the new business of computing on practice”. The course will take place at TU Delft and is intended for master students (in NL). The course is limited to 40 people, is interactive and includes group assignments which all participants are expected to complete. If MA students don’t take all seats, we welcome others interested in the course, just get in touch.

I've been sitting on this essay for a few months. I wrote the bulk of it closer to December, but the twin griefs of loss still remain.

Ozone, Bluesky's stackable moderation system is up and open-sourced.

https://bsky.social/about/blog/03-12-2024-stackable-moderation

I think it's interesting in obvious ways and risky in some less obvious ones (that have less to do with "O NO BILLIONAIRES" or "O NO LIBERTARIANS" and more to do with placelessness), but we'll see.

I hope good things emerge from/grow on top of this framework.

[I recognize that mentioning this is widely considered to be an invitation to explain capital like I am a tiny baby. You could also not.]

Bluesky’s Stackable Approach to Moderation - Bluesky

Today, we’re open sourcing Ozone, a tool that lets a team of moderators or curators collaboratively review reports, create labels, and inspect content on the atproto network. Later this week, we’re opening up the ability for users to run their own independent moderation services.
