Weir just isn't good at writing dialog and seems to be only capable of writing one singular character that's awfully close to himself: awkward, white, middle aged, nerdy guy.
Which falls apart really quickly when the protagonist is a teenage Muslim girl that talks, and quips, just like Mark Watney.
It was just so cringe worthy.
