Just caught #ProjectHailMary. REALLY good film. It's kinda weird, too, which makes me both surprised and delighted that it's doing so well.

There's a couple bits where they had to basically shortcut in order for the film to work (I won't say WHAT exactly), but I pushed that bit aside and just enjoyed it.

@fortyseven I have mixed feelings on the book, and Weir's writing in general, but Im excited to see the move this weekend.

@owl I was aware it was a book, but I went into it with no information beyond what was in the first trailer. And even then I wish I didn't see it, given how much it revealed. 😔

(But then I might not have gone, so... it is what it is. :))

I'll be interested to hear what you think, though. I've heard from others that it's generally faithful to the book. But I can't vouch for that, of course.

@fortyseven I still haven't watched the trailer! His writing is...not great and definitely lends itself more to screenplays. Hopefully seeing it this weekend

@owl @fortyseven I've read a couple of Weir's books but not this one so I get what you mean.

the movie is good, I'm glad they leaned into the ridiculous parts.
they brushed over the parts I found most interesting so I might need to read the book.

@JoYo @fortyseven It's definitely his best book. Artemis was his worst.
@owl @fortyseven i liked artemis but i get it. it was more space cowboys than the martian.

@JoYo @fortyseven That wasn't my issue. I love space cowboys.

Weir just isn't good at writing dialog and seems to be only capable of writing one singular character that's awfully close to himself: awkward, white, middle aged, nerdy guy.

Which falls apart really quickly when the protagonist is a teenage Muslim girl that talks, and quips, just like Mark Watney.

It was just so cringe worthy.
