This week's composition, using the #microtonal #guitar for a fingerpicking instrumental. Sometimes floats, sometimes flows. https://weeklybeats.com/onezero/music/cahir

A couple years ago, I cobbled together a partscaster with a neck I'd had fretted for a grab-bag of just intonation intervals--24 to the "octave." It's been a while since I used it for one of the weekly tracks, because the plastic nut was slotted to have the strings closer together than I'd prefer. I'm planning to replace it with a bone nut, which I'll slot with spacing more like my other guitars. It could probably use a little tweaking with the action as well; you'll hear some inconsistent fretting, though some of that may be my limited positioning given the close spacing. The signal chain is similar to the recent ones: JHS Colourbox, UA Volt, a bit of send to a convolution reverb, and compression/eq/limiting on the stereo. Aesthetically, this one has some stronger sections and some floatier sections. There were other themes I liked, but which didn't fit and were left out. You'll hear me trying to get comfortable with this tuning again, which...may change soon. It's currently Bb F C E A D: fifths on the bottom, fourths on the top. While I liked the idea of the extended range, this ends up a bit weird: some things I'd want to fingerpick are long stretches, already made awkward with the tight fretting. Fifths all the way up would have been too much tension on the neck, I think. The title comes from the town in Ireland on R640.
Monday's #microtonal #ambient #guitar #livestream is now up, featuring #justIntonation intervals, slow progression, and nebulous timbres. $0/name-your-price at https://snwv.bandcamp.com/album/music-at-a-distance-301

This week’s composition, once again with the Kalamazoo in modified tuning (and, distractingly, the vibrating metal pickguard). Kind of a meditative vibe here. https://weeklybeats.com/onezero/music/tyril

Going back to the well with the Kalamazoo. For this week, I really wanted a little more range under my hands, so I dropped the low string of last week's E F# C# E F# A tuning to this week's D F# C# E F# A. Does this one work? It flows, at least. Under use, the pickguard has gotten a bit more rattly, so you hear it more here. My todo list now includes fret leveling/crowning/dressing, re-shimming the neck, a bridge replacement (including radiusing), and finally doing something about the pickguard rattle. The previous owner fashioned a pickguard out of a stop sign, which is part of this guitar's story, so it has to stay. But I'll gradually get it in shape. For now, though, it's rattling all over the place when I play more aggressively. Once again, I have the JHS Colourbox 10 in the signal chain, along with some overdrive in the UA Volt. There's the usual send to a convolution reverb, and the usual compression/eq/limiter preset for the stereo mix. The title comes from the elevation of Mount Tyril in the Faroe Islands--639m.
This week brought my 300th Monday #ambient #guitar #improv #livestream since starting the series six years ago. This one is still slow, but seems more energetic, the notes of the #pedalSteel humming with a charge. $0/name-your-price at https://snwv.bandcamp.com/album/music-at-a-distance-300

In 2020, we all took some solace in the Nature is Healing memes, even the silly ones. But the thing is, with even the slightest nudge in the right direction, even the smallest relief from our boot on its neck, it does. Nature does heal and reclaim.
We knew salmon were returning to Upper Klamath Lake after the dam removal there. But now we know they are breeding, and making the first natural hatchlings there in over 100 years. This is great news.
