Tax geek focused on wealth planning / structuring. Human by birth. Secular by choice.

The situation in Florida - the authoritarian takeover of education, the escalating reactionary campaign to stifle, censor, and ban any dissent from the white nationalist worldview - is a proper democratic emergency.

So far, the response has been utterly inadequate.

Most of our hires have been from referrals: The people we have talk with the good people they know.

Our management learned *the hard way*, several years ago, that layoffs cause current employees to *STOP* trying to pull others in. It's a *LONG* road to recover from that!

@genecowan @RichardKeppler @pkrugman The bosses will always take care of themselves. You should too.
@genecowan @pkrugman You should certainly do a job search to see if changing employers is a good move for you. Most employers will cut employees if it’s even marginally advantageous. So there is no real loyalty anymore. Even if your employer is better than average it sure can’t hurt to look around.
As the DeSantis regime eviscerates freedom of speech in Florida's university system, timid journalists use the anodyne word "conservative" to describe him and his apparatchiks. Refusing to call the extremists what they truly are is poor journalism. https://www.heraldtribune.com/story/news/politics/2023/01/06/gov-ron-desantis-wants-conservative-overhaul-at-new-college-of-florida/69784941007/
DeSantis seeks to transform Sarasota's New College with conservative board takeover

DeSantis appointed six new board members to Sarasota's New College of Florida Friday in a bid to transform the school into something more conservative.

McCarthy represents the Republican establishment. That doesn’t mean he’s a “moderate.” It means the GOP establishment is fully embracing the extremism as the party has moved so far to the right that yesterday’s radical fringe is now firmly in the center of conservative politics.
@frankreiff @JamesGleick I think the issue is that the Rules Committee can block it from coming up for a vote. And Kevin has promised to install at least two crazies on the Committee.

Andrew Carnegie, once one of America's richest, supported heavy inheritance taxes as a means to return "the people's share" upon one's death. In 1906, he wrote in "The Gospel of Wealth -II" that:

"Where wealth accrues honorably, the people are always silent partners."¹

So, he supported your suggestion for taxes on billionaires with the aim of "returning the bulk of their wealth to the society that made them rich in the first place."

Because of the complete lack of reliability with the orange line I now pay $4,800 a year for a parking garage downtown, and the T loses $1,080 a year because I no longer buy T passes. The worse they are, the more we all lose.
