This should have been big news!

Ten funding agencies from eight European countries have pledged to support a public infrastructure that is poised to replace academic journals:
FWF 🇦🇹
RCN 🇳🇴
Forte 🇸🇪
ARIS 🇸🇮
SRC 🇸🇪
FCT 🇵🇹
CSIC 🇪🇸
DFG 🇩🇪
Formas 🇸🇪
ANR 🇫🇷
Only two of them issued press releases in English:

Joint Commitment to Strengthening Open Research Europe

In December 2024, ten leading European research funding organizations, including the Austrian Science Fund (FWF), signed a Statement of Intent to jointly support and further develop the Open Research Europe (ORE) publication platform.

🎉 Big news! Stalwart Labs has received a grant from @nlnet to build calendar, contacts, and file storage support into Stalwart Mail Server.
A full self-hosted collaboration suite is on the way! Learn more at https://stalw.art/blog/nlnet-grant-collaboration/
Stalwart Receives NLNet Grant to Build Collaboration Server | Stalwart Labs

We’re happy to announce that Stalwart Labs has been awarded a new grant from the NGI0 Core Fund, established by NLnet with financial support from the European Commission’s Next Generation Internet programme. This funding will support the development of essential collaboration features, marking a major milestone in Stalwart’s evolution from a modern email server into a complete, self-hosted collaboration platform.

Oh look, Starlink is continuing to screw up the sky in every way possible.

"Second-Generation Starlink Satellites Leak 30 Times More Radio Interference, Threatening Astronomical Observations"

https://www.astron.nl/starlink-satellites/

It's going to be "hilarious" when Starlink messes up the radio sky so badly that radio astronomers can't even use quasars to calibrate GPS anymore. There are so many consequences from all these stupid, cheaply built, disposable satellites. https://www.universetoday.com/105160/navigating-the-cosmos-by-quasar/

Second-Generation Starlink Satellites Leak 30 Times More Radio Interference, Threatening Astronomical Observations | ASTRON

Observations with the LOFAR (Low Frequency Array) radio telescope last year showed that first generation Starlink satellites emit unintended radio waves that can hinder astronomical observations.

Albuquerque, NM, has become the largest U.S. city to permanently make public transportation free for everyone. The city found that fares didn’t cover the administrative fees, so they actually save money by making public transportation free.

@StevenBarnhart @swetland at first I was a little surprised, but I think modern gnome is outstanding and delightful - and I can’t take any credit for it.

They have nurtured a good culture and community of design.

And I think that having the culture and community is a more important asset than the current product shape.

Design and trends come and go. They will adapt and change, sometimes for the better, sometimes not, but they have a team and culture to drive it.

Companies should heavily support and invest in open platforms.

Sure, getting some crumbs from the EU on the DMA might have some short term benefits. But you should take charge of your future.

Put your money where your mouth is: fund (and fund with passion, not just a few dollars here and there), support, and make opensource- based mobile and desktop operating systems your top priority.

Otherwise, you are just another capitalist swine fighting for a larger portion of slop from the trough.

🤬 #Exxon files lawsuit against investors' climate proposal

“This is the first time Exxon is seeking to exclude a shareholder proposal by filing a complaint in court. It says the investors are "driven by an extreme agenda" and that adopting stricter emission goals would be detrimental to its business and share value” #BigOil #ClimateCrisis

"We have long known that dragging heavy fishing nets—some as large as ten 747 jets—across the ocean floor destroys sea life and habitats.

Only recently, we have discovered that #BottomTrawling also unleashes plumes of carbon, which otherwise would be safely stored for millennia in the ocean floor. "

"The amount of carbon dioxide released into the ocean from bottom trawling is on the same order of magnitude as annual carbon dioxide #emissions from global aviation."

Team uncovers new marine source of carbon emissions into atmosphere

Bottom trawling is a previously unaccounted for source of atmospheric carbon emissions, scientists reveal in a study published today. As the world scrambles to slash emissions caused by fossil fuels, deforestation and other sources, the study finds bottom trawling—the act of dragging a heavy fishing net across the ocean floor and resuspending some of the carbon in the seafloor sediment—to be a significant source of atmospheric carbon pollution.
