trying to imagine a world without couples

"The freedom to love anyone, and express it in any way that makes sense to us, is another gap from which something essential has been torn away. This freedom is rooted in the neo-liberal freedom to chose between a high number of options - of products, of relationships - where we nonetheless can not refuse to chose. When we can see that we don't option to say "no" to the freedom of choice, the illusion dispels. We are not truly free."

"In addition to our struggles in the streets and at the printing presses, we open up an additional front against coupledom. Feminist struggle remains the ever-enticing horizon before us." (Against the couple form, Clémence X. Clementine and associates from the Infinite Venom Girl Gang)

Down with patriarchy, down with the couple form!

How can we think of couple abolition as part of feminist struggle?

"romance is one of the most powerful disciplining mechanisms in our society, because it does not just prohibit desire but also structures it." (an aromantic manifesto - yingchen & yingtong)

"She does not know which is greater, the melancholia of the couple or the melancholia of denouncing it as a social form. Most opt for the sadness of the couple over the alienation of being cut loose from its grasp." (Against the couple form - Clémence x. Clémentine, 2012)
I wish people could see that having people who check in on you, show up to help you, offer to meet up for coffee during hard times, actually include you in their lives, is a privilege that a lot of people do not have.

"The baggage of the historical iterations of marriage weighs so heavily on the couple form that legal support and warrants seem hardly necessary to induce conformity to the romantic conventions, gender roles and sexual scripts that are historically embedded within the institution of marriage. One might even conclude that by finally eliminating the role of the state, the privatised couple form is not diluted but perfected; the rise of never married couples could be read as a historical development from the 19th-century state and philanthropic efforts to naturalise, moralise, sanction and police marriage, to the successful normalization of a self-governed married-like form." (Kathi Weeks, Abolition of the family, 2023)
