New blog post! "Where is all of the fediverse?"

The fediverse is de-centralised, but it still needs to be hosted behind something, in this post I investigate where the most of the instances are, and working around caching proxies to get a better idea of how resilient to hosting disasters the ecosystem is.

Seattle Times: Boeing wants FAA to exempt MAX 7 from safety rules to get it in the air:

Over pilots’ objection, Boeing seeks safety exemption for MAX 7

Boeing asked the FAA to exempt its 737 MAX 7 from certain safety regulations. Without the exemption, an engine anti-ice system defect will keep the jet from being certified.

Got to say it again, sometimes I think online petitions are actively harmful as they give the impression someone is doing something about an issue rather than shouting into a void.

Which they are.

Got to be almost 15 years and every so often this little bit of demoscene still pops into my head as it’s that good: https://youtu.be/sbQhgEJuExY

Infuriating that iOS lockdown mode stops (of all things) phone calls appearing on a linked watch.
I’ve been trying to work out what was wrong for months and had no idea that was even a suspect.
@paninid @aarbrk @categulario @rysiek @stoneymonster Nope, not a great Chevrolet sales person (er.. AI). That said, it will write poems for you if you ask. I had it write me a poem about how bicycling is better than driving a car, LOL.

We found that the PLC code actually contained logic that would lock up the train with bogus error codes after some date, or if the train wasn't running for a given time. One version of the controller actually contained GPS coordinates to contain the behaviour to third party workshops.

It was also possible to unlock the trains by pressing a key combination in the cabin controls. None of this was documented.

I can finally reveal some research I've been involved with over the past year or so.

We (@redford, @mrtick and I) have reverse engineered the PLC code of NEWAG Impuls EMUs. These trains were locking up for arbitrary reasons after being serviced at third-party workshops. The manufacturer argued that this was because of malpractice by these workshops, and that they should be serviced by them instead of third parties.

Microsoft paid money for this. A lot of money. And they gave it to us for free.
