@jack I love that lecture, it heavily inspired the paper that came out of my master's research on using metrics to understand notations (see https://medium.com/multiple-views-visualization-research-explained/metrics-for-reasoning-about-the-usability-of-visualization-notations-6c03b9292780 for a gloss) ... the 'distance' metric in particular I think could be used to understand suggestivity: what is closer to what (see the dendrogram figure for example!)

Have you ever thought: what's the actual difference between two charting tools? We explore a nearby-reading (not quite distant/not quite close) that uses a metrics-driven approach to answer that question.

In @nicolaskruchten, my, and Mike McGuffin's upcoming paper #ieeevis paper we develop an eval framework answering this question (and similar ones) for any charting notation (dsl/grammar/whatever).

Whenever I explain my #research at Google into mobile text editing, I'm usually met with blank stares or a slightly hostile "Everyone can edit text on their phones, right? What's the problem?"

Text editing on mobile isn't ok. It's actually much worse than you think, an invisible problem no one appreciates. I wrote this post so you can understand why it's so important.

@spiralganglion agree! have you tried the pinch-zoom-out trick on it? it becomes small and repositionable so you can one-hand it off the side... it's sometimes handy.
@lisacmuth Glad you like it! The color selection was meant to evoke the time of day rather than being any kind of linear scale or anything... sunrise greyish, noon yellowish, sunset reddish, nighttime blueish. I think it mostly works! With more time/energy I would have indicated the distribution on the scale, made it interactive etc ;)
@lisacmuth I just wish we'd been able to use it to color the bars in the little sub-charts that pop up when you click on the bubbles, or to make the bubbles little glyphs or something :)

[Grand format] Le covoiturage a des effets positifs en réduisant le nombre de voitures dans les rues. Mais sa popularité cause aussi bien des maux de tête à certains résidents, les privant d’espaces de stationnement près de chez eux.

@Birdbassador season 2 is all about the Ottoman Empire… excellent stuff. First time I’ve binge-listened to a podcast, no commute required on this end.
@Birdbassador Have you been listening to the Empire podcast?? I love it :)
