I put together a Google Sheets with a list of game engines and frameworks. Of course my nCine is on top! šŸ’ŖšŸ˜‰

The big list of game engines

Hello, I'm the author of nCine, an open source 2D game framework. While researching my "competitors", I put together a list of all the engines and...

@Craigp @jannem for some time in the 201x I noticed a number of games had beautiful scenery (especially grass, trees and nature in general) but were using a bunch of plot tricks to justify that you never met anyone im the game world. I attributed that to the fact that modeling and animating people (or animals) is 10x the difficulty of scattering a few rocks on the ground. This is most noticeable in games reaulting from game jams, where you can’t waste any time.
@BartWronski I get the intent, but ā€œtrustā€ isn’t binary… there are shades of trust, and most of the time I build something from scratch that shade is brighter than when I have to use someone else’s code - not because I think I’m better, but because my understanding of the code is obviously better.
In the end I think I would use some generated code as a starter, but won’t ever use without a good review SO, I guess if bad things happen, it’s still gonna be moronic user’s fault, which is fair.
@demofox @jkaniarz @snagy @BartWronski lying on your resume is a big no-no… but on a social media bio..?? 😳
@BartWronski @demofox wow, this is a great post. I skimmed it very quickly but looks like there’s a lot to agree on.
Even if I was not new to the game, I fell victim of the underleveling trick myself: it sucks, and (as you anticipated) it made me waste my last two years.
@BartWronski I’d trust your judgement, but I’m not too convinced myself.
People like to use the ā€œiPhone momentā€ argument, but what they’re thinking about is a new ā€œinternet for the massesā€ moment - except it was not a moment but years in the making, and it was not a single coordinated effort by some company trying to capitalize on it.
@eli Ah! I kind of did the same thing in my time, but I’m thankful I did that, because the ā€œdetailsā€ turned out to be way more interesting - for *me*- than play game designer at high level.
(Knowing those details and being enthusiastic about them is what ended up being my career, too, so you could say my current occupation is just a very long detour I took)
@eli interesting. What’s your perspective? I mean, when I approached processing I had already had a pretty extensive experience with several low level languages and Java.
I loved processing’s attempt at making everything simple for the new starter, but in a very short time all that sugar coating got in my way and I ended up using processing libraries in an actual java IDE.
That was like more than 15 years ago, not sure this is still the case.
@demofox @paniq european definitely know all looney toons characters very well. At least those my age.

Bart, you just described Meta. At this point with all the new startups copying MO and jargon (ā€œimpactā€, anyone?) I really wonder how many of the current tech companies are converging asymptotically to ā€œthe Google/Meta wayā€
