Slime mould! I think this one is Craterium leucocephalum. Slime moulds aren't plants, or animals, or fungi - they split off at some point after plants, but before fungi and animals.

I hope to get better at photographing these - this one was super-tiny, with each "stalk" around 1mm high. I stacked 24 exposures to get this end result.

This tiny, multicolored beetle arrived at our apartment. It was so small I thought it was another tick I'd brought back from the woods, but when I managed to take some macro shots, I saw how adorable it was. I photographed it and left it on the trees in the garden.
